When a cavity is quite extended or a tooth is heavily broken, a typical composite reconstruction is contra-indicated and your dentist will propose you an inlay or an onlay. It is basically an all ceramic individualised tooth reconstruction.
The advantages are many; it can be used in both vital and non-vital teeth, it highly resembles the natural contours of the dental anatomy, and since it’s cemented on the tooth it offers a perfectly sealed final reconstruction.
Normally, an inlay/onlay is placed in two appointments.
