The cutting of teeth

Cutting of the last baby teeth takes place between 20 and 33 months of age, and these ones will remain in mouth until eleven or twelve years of age. The primary teeth play a significant role regarding the permanent ones, because they prepare and preserve their place until the cutting of the permanent teeth between six and thirteen years of age.

Tooth brushing

Tooth brushing must be carried out at least twice a day, using a toothbrush with supple bristles, and fluoride toothpaste (the size of a pea of toothpaste is enough). If the child has a susceptibility to the decay, a brushing should be done moreover, after each meal and after each sweetened or sticky snack.

You are a model

The young child observes and tries to imitate. Incite him to hold the toothbrush, and to do himself movements of brushing. However, you will have always to complete the brushing, because the child gets the required dexterity only around six years of age, and sometimes even eight years! The child of less than six years must always be attended by an adult when he is brushing his teeth, in order to ensure that each surface is properly cleaned, that the child doesn’t swallow toothpaste, and that he rinses his mouth adequately.

Dental floss

Some children have got spaced teeth, and other ones have got more tightened ones. No toothbrush can clean properly, when two teeth are in contact. As decay is able to develop between these two teeth, only the dental floss will make it possible to complete the cleaning at this place. In this way, at least once a day, your child will need your help and this until he has the required ability. Earlier he will start with the dental floss technique, better will be the dexterity, and more rapidly he will be inclined to include this very good habit in the daily routine.

Visit to the dental hygienist

Your child should keep on going to the dental hygienist every six or twelve months, according to the frequency established to ensure an optimal follow-up, in accordance with his needs. It is better to well prepare the child before the visit: history books and role-games will help you. You will better fix an appointment in the morning, because at this moment of the day, the child is relaxed. The visits will mainly consist of a teeth polishing, of an application of fluoride, and of customized advices of the dental hygienist.

Sealing of the wells and cracks (sealent)

The hollows and furrows of the masticatory surface of the permanent teeth, easily retain the food remains and the bacteria of the biofilm (dental plaque), and thus are conducive to the development of the decay. As soon as the cutting of the first permanent molars (at around six years of age), and according to their morphology, a sealing will perhaps be advised to you. This resin will fill the hollows and furrows, and, combined with a good hygiene, will prevent development of decays.

Food

The choice of snacks is very important for the dental health of your child. Fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as some cheeses, are very good for his dental health. 100% pure fruit juices are better than some drinks or fruit cocktails, which are very rich in sugar and poor of vitamins. However, too many fruit juices are conducive to an acid environment, favourable to the decay. Nothing better than water to quench great thirsts. Finally, take care that your child eats enough dairy products.
